Small Talk Can Lead to Big Talk

The best invitations are always personal. In John chapter 4, Jesus initiated a very personal conversation with a very unlikely woman. Carefully observing the details of this encounter will help us learn how Jesus extended an invitation to people who felt forgotten by God. We too must find our personal “wells” where we can intentionally encounter others who may also feel alienated from God.  We can learn how to start “small talk” conversations that create opportunities to invite people into a relationship with God through meeting Jesus and bypassing their excuses and traditions.

In this encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well, Jesus initiated a simple conversation. The woman’s response opened the door to a deeper conversation where Jesus invited her to see the world in a new light, eventually inviting her to receive new life! Big conversations all start with small talk that can lead to a big personal invitation to life!

Take away: Where are the “wells” of invitation in your community?
